Disposal of Unclaimed Articles

Unclaimed unregistered letter mail articles are forwarded to the RLO.
The cause of non-delivery must be clearly marked on the article in red ink on the address side. The entries should be initialed and dated by the marking official, and the date stamp should be impressed on the date of dispatch.

The following terms should be used depending on the circumstance: 
o 'Left', 'Not Known': After seven days of failed delivery efforts, articles with clearly visible sender name and address should be returned directly to the sender. Other articles should be sent to the RLO.
o 'Post restante': Ordinarily after one month, articles with the sender's name and address on the outside should be returned directly to the sender.
o Acknowledgements: To be destroyed after four months.
o Telegrams: (except Post restante) To telegraph offices of posting after three days.
o Packets of Registered Newspapers: To the office of posting after seven days.
o "Left India": To RLO at once.
o "Deceased": To RLO at once.
o "Redirected": To RLO at once unless the addressee or the redirecting office has given instructions for the article to be kept in deposit or the addressee is expected shortly.
o "From RLO": To RLO at once, unless the addressee is expected shortly or has given instructions for the article to be kept in deposit.

Unclaimed articles forwarded to RLO (Reasons for Non-Delivery)
Before unclaimed articles are forwarded to the RLO, the cause of non-delivery must be clearly marked on them in red ink, and the entries should be initialed and dated by the official marking them.
Left India: When the addressee has left no redirection instructions and is known not to be in India.
Left: When the addressee has departed without leaving disposal instructions, and reliable information about their new address cannot be obtained.
Not Known: When the addressee is unknown to the post office or anyone in its delivery area, or when the intended recipient cannot be ascertained.
Not Claimed: For "Poste restante" articles and those not sent for delivery, where addressees fail to take delivery within the prescribed deposit period.
Deceased: For articles addressed to deceased persons that cannot be delivered to someone else.
Unclaimed articles forwarded to RLO (Foreign Articles)
If an unclaimed article is a foreign letter mail article, the reason for non-delivery must be indicated in both French and English (e.g., Inconnu (Not known), Refuse (Refused), En voyage (Travelling), Parti (Gone away), Non – reclame (Not claimed), Decede (Deceased)).
