P.O. Guide – Part I
To be studied for the examination point of view
1. The Post offices which are kept open for specially extended hours are called as:- Night post office.
2. The working hours of the Night post office are generally fixed by the – Head of the circle.
3. Under whose orders, the working hours of the night post office can be extended up to 8.30 pm and keep them open Sundays – Director General posts.
4. The NPOs will function on Sundays and holidays in one shift only – Between 10-00 am to 17.00 pm.
5. The NPOS will not do the work on Sundays & National holidays – The delivery functions and payments of MOS, S.B /SC work and cash remittance to other post offices.
6. Enquiry related to postal business and sale of stamps and stationary is allowed at the POs – During the entire working hours of the PO.
7. The franked articles will be tendered at the counter along with – Window delivery ticket.
8. The value of franked articled tendered across the counter shall tally with the figures furnished in – Register of postings.
9. Last despatch of franked articles should accompany with the form duly filled up, signed and dated – A daily docket.
10. The limit of franking amount on a franked amount on a franked article – It will be allowed up to any amount.
11. The Franked articles posted in the letter Box will be treated as – unpaid articles.
12. The franked articles bearing the impression of previous date – should not be accepted.
13. Repairs to the Franking machine will be carried out by the authorized suppliers only at – the premises of the post office.
14. In case of repair of Franking machine outside, the licence, die shall be removed from the machine. The post office is authorised to remove the licence die – the post office where the daily dockets register is maintained.
15. Cut – out labels with frank impressions shall not be used in – Insured letter articles.
16. If a sender requests to recall the article / Insured, he should present the copy of the – original receipt granted by the post office.
17. If a postal article is redirected by air following the request, the necessary surcharge shall be collected from – the addressee.
18. If the addressee or his agent fails to take delivery of parcel within seven days from the date of services of notice, it will be treated – as unclaimed and disposed of.
19. If three parcels received for delivery to a person having aggregate of more than 10 kgs, but individual weight is less than 10 kg, the articles shall be sent out for delivery – through postman.
20. A parcel, having weight of more than 10 kgs –shall be delivered at the premises on the payment of – additional sum of Rs. 5/- by the sender in the shape of postage stamps.
21. Insured articles for more than the value of Rs. 500/- shall be delivered only at the – Post office window.
22. Before delivery of an insured article, the delivery staff should obtain signature in ink – the receipt and acknowledgement.
23. For money orders, complaints should be preferred – within 12 months.
24. In respect of VP articles, complaints should be preferred – within 3 months.
25. The financial limit for payment of compensation for the loss of contents or any damage in postal article is vested with the SP/ First class postmaster to the extent of Rs. 100/- maximum.
26. If the payee of the money order refuses to take payment, it should be returned for to the remitter – on the same day.
27. A VP article can be returned to sender – in case if it is not claimed within 7 days from the date of intimation.
28. Complaints and suggestion books kept with the Postmaster (All Offices including BOs) should be made available to be members of public – without their asking of it.
29. A letter was delivered by a third person to whom the letter was addressed without the knowledge of post office – No action can be taken under Post Office Act since it is outside the of the privilege of P.O. monopoly. (83)
30. India post is exempted by law from all the responsibilities in case of loss of any postal article in the course of transmission. (84)
31. One parcel about 4.15 kg was brought to the PO. The counter PA should compulsorily register the parcel. (Regn. is compulsory for Parcels weighing 4 kgs) (171)
32. One VP article with full postage posted in the letter Box. It should be handed over to the VP counter PA for booking. (171)
33. Postman brought a speed post article and handed over to Mail PA that registration is not compulsory. The mail PA – should hand over the same to speed post counter for booking. (171)
34. The facility of prepayment of postage charges in cash is not available for insured article. (12)
35. The condition of posting of registered newspaper is that it should be published at the interval of not more than 31 days. (140)
36. Business Reply services is a facility under which a person can obtain a reply from his client without making him to pay the postage. Such replies can be obtained through – Business reply cards. (116)
37. The compensation for the loss of registered article is restricted to the maximum of Rs. 100/-. (162)
38. VP articles can be detained at POs (Exceeding 7 days from the date of receipt) by paying demurrage charges after the intimation period in the shape of – postage stamps.
39. One article presented for certificate of posting – The counter PA should refuse it since the provision of certificate of posting is withdrawn.
40. If one postman paid a money order to the wrong payee, he should recover the amount from that person and credit under UCR.
41. Identification cards can be issued only to literate persons. (63)
42. Once a notice arrival of a postal article is given to the addressee, - it need not be redirected to elsewhere. (67)
43. If the sender of an article requested the postmaster to redirect the article from transit office, it cannot be redirected. (67)
44. Insured articles having insured for more than Rs. 500 /- it will be delivered only at the post office window.
45. If an open delivery of a damaged insured article is demanded, it should be opened only in the presence of postmaster. (42)
46. In case of open delivery of a damaged insured article, the inventory should be prepared in duplicate and one copy should be sent to the sender.
47. Money orders, RL, Insured & VP articles addressed to be paid/ delivered to a particular person of a firm for which the post box is registered, should be paid/ delivered only through the postman. (56)
48. If the lock and key are not surrendered by the renter of a Post Box after the expiry of the rental period and not renewed within 15 days, the deposit will be forfeited. (56)
49. No application for the renewal of the post box is entertained unless it reaches the Postmaster before the – expiry of the period for which rent has been paid in advance (56)
50. A letter/ article posted without required postage is charged on delivery with double the postage. (101)
