Drive for Shifting and Relocating Dilapidated Post Office Buildings

The initiative was launched as a key task under the Swachh Bharat Mission Annual Action Plan 2014-2015. The primary details of the drive include:
A total of 685 dilapidated post office buildings were identified by various Circle Heads across India.
The shifting and relocation of these identified buildings were mandated to be completed by the end of June 2015.
The drive aimed to improve the brand image of the department and increase customer footfalls by moving services to better locations.
The Secretary highlighted specific issues where post offices were functioning in rented buildings since the late 1950s or early 1960s with very low monthly rents (e.g., ₹45 or ₹81). In many such cases, landlords refused to accept rent or perform maintenance for decades, necessitating urgent relocation.
To ensure the success of the mission, specific instructions were issued to senior officials:
Heads of Circles were requested to carry out a mapping of existing networks in cities to work out the logistics of shifting.
The Chief Postmaster General (CPMG) of each circle was held solely responsible for ensuring the success of the mission and reporting compliance within the specified timeframe.
