Additional Duties for Postman/Delivery Staff
The order dated November 25, 2008, with order number No. 25–20/2008 PE.I, prescribed a number of additional duties for Postman/Delivery Staff. These changes were implemented to reflect the evolution of work in Post Offices due to new technology and business products.
The new duties are to be performed in addition to those already outlined in the Postal Manual Volume VI/Chapter III.
Key Additional Duties:
• Data Entry: Postmen are required to perform data entry for mail articles in various modules of the Meghdoot software, such as the Postman and Speednet modules. This is to be done for 80 minutes on each working day (60 minutes before delivery and 20 minutes after returning from the beat).
• Sorting and Preparation: They must assist the Sorting Postman/Head Postman in beat sorting. If there is no Sorting Postman/Head Postman, the Postman will handle the beat sorting themselves. Other sorting and preparation tasks include assisting in table sorting, segregating missent and misdirected articles, and preparing special delivery slips for bulk addressees by data entry. They are also responsible for sorting accountable articles and Money Orders by beat and entering them into the computer system for printing delivery slips.
• Cash and Stamps: Postmen may be ordered by the Postmaster to collect surplus cash from Sub Post Offices within their beat and remit it to the main post office. They may also assist treasurers in sorting currency notes, making denomination-wise bundles, and escorting them when drawing or remitting cash from a Bank/Treasury. Drawing revenue stamps from a treasury or sub-treasury is another possible duty if ordered by the Postmaster.
• Business and Other Tasks: Additional duties include acting as an agent for promoting PLI/RPLI and other Business Development Products. They can also be used for data entry of RPLI/PLI proposals and for generating acceptance memos for policies, with an incentive paid for this work. They are also responsible for preparing and regularly updating the beat list and beat map for their assigned area. Finally, they may be assigned any other duty by the Department or the Head of the office.
The additional duties were approved by the Secretary (Posts).
