• இந்நூல் நல்லாதனார் என்னும் புலவரால் இயற்றப்பட்டதாகும்.
• திரிகடுகம் என்பது மூன்று மருந்துப் பொருட்களைக் குறிக்கும்.
• சுக்கு, மிளகு, திப்பிலி என்னும் மூலிகைகள் உடலுக்கு நன்மை செய்வது போல் இந்நூலில் ஒவ்வொரு பாட்டிலும் உள்ள மூன்று கருத்துக்கள் வாழ்விற்கு நன்மை செய்யும். ஆதலால் இந்நூல் திரிகடுகம் என்றுஅழைக்கப் படுகிறது
கழகத்தால் வந்த பொருள் காமுறாமை,
பழகினும் பார்ப்பாரைத் தீப்போல், ஒழுகல்,
உழவின்கண் காமுற்று வாழ்தல், - இம் மூன்றும்
அழகு என்ப வேளாண் குடிக்கு. . . . .[42]
இந்த பழந்தமிழ் பாடல் வேளாண் குடியினரின் (விவசாயிகளின்) சிறப்பான பண்புகளை விளக்குகிறது:
"கழகத்தால் வந்த பொருள் காமுறாமை" - சூதாட்டத்தால் வரும் பொருளை விரும்பாமை (அதாவது நேர்மையான வழியில் மட்டுமே பொருள் ஈட்டுதல்)
"பழகினும் பார்ப்பாரைத் தீப்போல் ஒழுகல்" - அந்தணர்களுடன் பழகும்போது தீயைப் போல் கவனமாக நடந்து கொள்ளுதல் (மரியாதையுடன் நடத்தல்)
"உழவின்கண் காமுற்று வாழ்தல்" - விவசாயத்தில் ஆர்வம் கொண்டு வாழ்தல்
"இம் மூன்றும் அழகு என்ப வேளாண் குடிக்கு" - இந்த மூன்று பண்புகளும் விவசாய குடிமக்களுக்கு அழகானவை என்று சொல்கிறார்கள்.
சூதாட்டத்தினால் கிடைத்த பொருளை விரும்பாமையும், பிராமணரை அஞ்சி நடத்தலும், பயிர் செய்து வாழ்தலும் வேளாளர்க்கு அழகு.
This ancient Tamil poem describes the admirable qualities of the Vellala (agricultural) community:
"Not desiring wealth obtained through gambling" - This refers to earning wealth only through honest means.
"Even when associating with Brahmins, behaving like fire" - This means acting with caution and respect when interacting with Brahmins.
"Desiring to live through agriculture" - This refers to having a passion for farming and making a livelihood through it.
"These three are said to be the beauty of the agricultural community" - These three qualities are considered beautiful for the farming community.
Not desiring wealth obtained through gambling, respectfully interacting with Brahmins, and living by cultivating the land are the beauty of the Vellala. (Farmer community)
