• இந்நூல் நல்லாதனார் என்னும் புலவரால் இயற்றப்பட்டதாகும். 

• திரிகடுகம் என்பது மூன்று மருந்துப் பொருட்களைக் குறிக்கும். 

• சுக்கு, மிளகு, திப்பிலி என்னும் மூலிகைகள் உடலுக்கு நன்மை செய்வது போல் இந்நூலில் ஒவ்வொரு பாட்டிலும் உள்ள மூன்று கருத்துக்கள் வாழ்விற்கு நன்மை செய்யும். ஆதலால் இந்நூல் திரிகடுகம் என்றுஅழைக்கப் படுகிறது

தூர்ந்து ஒழுகிக்கண்ணும், துணைகள் துணைகளே;

சார்ந்து ஒழுகிக்கண்ணும், சலவர் சலவரே;

ஈர்ந்த கல் இன்னார் கயவர்; - இவர் மூவர்,

தேர்ந்தக்கால், தோன்றும் பொருள். . . . .[51]

"தூர்ந்து ஒழுகிக்கண்ணும், துணைகள் துணைகளே" - நல்ல நேரத்தில் மட்டும் துணையாக இருப்பவர்கள், எப்போதும் அப்படியே இருப்பார்கள்

"சார்ந்து ஒழுகிக்கண்ணும், சலவர் சலவரே" - உடன் இருந்து பழகும் போதும், வஞ்சகர்கள் வஞ்சகர்களாகவே இருப்பார்கள்

"ஈர்ந்த கல் இன்னார் கயவர்" - கயவர்கள் பிளக்கப்பட்ட கல்லைப் போல மாறாத இயல்பு உடையவர்கள்

"இவர் மூவர், தேர்ந்தக்கால், தோன்றும் பொருள்" - இந்த மூன்று வகையான மனிதர்களின் உண்மையான இயல்பு, நாம் ஆராய்ந்து பார்க்கும் போது தெரியும்

மனிதர்களின் அடிப்படை குணங்கள் எளிதில் மாறாது. வெளித்தோற்றத்தை மட்டும் நம்பக்கூடாது. ஒருவரின் உண்மையான குணத்தை அறிய நேரம் எடுத்து ஆராய வேண்டும்

வறுமையிலும் உதவுபவர் உறவினரேயாவார், கருத்துக்கு இணங்கி நடந்தவிடத்தும் பகைவர் பகைவரே ஆவர். துன்பம் செய்யும் கயவர்கள் பிளக்கப்பட்ட கல்லுக்கு ஒப்பாவார்கள். இவர்களிடம் எச்சரிக்கையுடன் இருக்க வேண்டும்.

"The base are unchanging like a split rock." - This metaphor compares those who are inherently bad or unreliable to a split rock, emphasizing their inflexibility and inability to change their negative qualities.

"These three types of people will be revealed when examined closely." - This underscores the importance of careful observation and analysis to understand the true nature of individuals, urging us not to be fooled by superficial appearances.

The poem imparts the wisdom of valuing true friendship, being wary of deceitful individuals, and recognizing the unchanging nature of those who are inherently bad. It encourages us to look beyond the surface and understand people's true character before placing our trust in them.
