Surface Mail Items: May be redirected to any place within India. Letters, aerogrammes, and postcards are eligible for free redirection by air within India. Other letter mail classes like printed papers, newspapers, and small packets are forwarded by surface route only. Air fee is required for air transmission.

Redirected to another country (Articles not from Countries applying Reduced Charges): By surface mail without charge, or by air if the sender, addressee, or a third person agrees to pay the air or combined charges.

Articles from Countries applying Reduced Charges (APPU Countries)
: By surface mail to any country on payment of the postage difference. By air, they are additionally subject to air surcharge or combined charge from India to the new destination.

Air Mail Items redirected to any place within India: As followed by Surface Mail.

Air Mail Items redirected to another country (Articles not from Countries applying Reduced Charges): By surface mail for free after scoring out the air mail label, or by air on payment of air surcharge or combined charge.

Air Mail Items from Countries applying Reduced Charges: By surface mail on payment of the difference in postage (excluding Air surcharge). By air mail on payment of deficient postage plus air surcharge or combined charge from India to the new destination.

Undeliverable correspondence An undeliverable postal article is one that is refused, not delivered within the specified period, if the addressee has left India without leaving instructions, if there is no person to whom the article can be properly delivered, or if the addressee is dead. Undeliverable correspondence is returned to the country of origin and delivered to the sender. Postcards without a sender's address are not returned. Unregistered Printed papers (other than books) of no value are not returned unless the sender has requested it. Undeliverable mail is normally returned by surface unless the sender specifically requested air return, in which case air surcharge or combined charge is recovered upon redelivery.

Official Postal articles Rules for private correspondence also apply to official postal articles. Service stamps can be used for prepaying outward official foreign mail. Postage due on inward foreign mail addressed to Government officers cannot be paid with service stamps.

Correspondence for personnel of the Indian Armed forces serving outside India Such correspondence should be addressed to the Indian Army P.O. (56 A.P.O.) or the Fleet Mail Office, Mumbai. They are not exempt from postal charges and should be prepaid at inland rates, treated as inland articles for all purposes.

Customs Declarations and other formalities connected with outward articles Letter post articles containing dutiable goods and all small packets must be accompanied by customs declaration forms.

Green customs label (C-1 / CN22): For articles valued less than 300 SDR (previously Rs. 3400/- or 918.30 Gold francs).

Detailed declaration form (C-2, CP-3 / CN23): For articles valued more than 300 SDR (previously Rs. 3400/- or 918.30 Gold francs). Customs declaration forms should be filled accurately and in detail to expedite customs formalities and avoid opening articles. Inaccurate or false declarations can lead to confiscation and legal proceedings.
