Manner of Prepayment of Postage
Postage can be prepaid using postage stamps, postal stationery, impressions of franking machines (including "INDIA POSTAGE"), or cash at authorized post offices. For unregistered packets, a minimum of 500 packets in big cities and 250 in small towns must be posted at once. For registered articles, at least 50 articles of the same type and weight must be posted at one time. A separate license is needed for posting registered newspapers under this system.

Articles posted on board ships A Post Office at a port will accept mail posted on board a ship. If posted during the ship's stay in an Indian port, Indian Postage Stamps are required. If posted on the high seas, stamps of the country to which the vessel belongs may be used. Air mails posted on board ships prepaid with non-Indian stamps must be handed over separately with an AV-2 statement.

Delivery in the country of destination Articles are delivered according to the internal legislation and regulations of the destination country, which vary widely. The Indian Postal Department is not responsible for the manner of delivery or return of an undelivered article if it aligns with the destination country's regulations. The detention period for undeliverable articles is also governed by the internal regulations of the destination country.

Instructions regarding disposal of outward foreign articles in the event of non-delivery The sender can provide instructions on the address side, such as "It should not be Redirected" or for return after a stipulated period in case of non-delivery.

Withdrawal from post and alteration of address The sender of a foreign article posted in India to a Union member country can withdraw it or alter its address. A written application with a fee (Rs. 30/- in postage stamps) and a sealed cover stating reasons must be submitted to any Sub or Head Post Office, preferably where the article was posted. For registered articles, the receipt must be produced. The Post Office will act only if the request is genuine but does not guarantee its ability to recall or alter the address. Requests are normally forwarded by surface means beyond India; if air forwarding is desired, the sender must pay the air surcharge for a 10-gram letter to the concerned country. For returned articles, the sender pays the corresponding air surcharge. For address-altered articles redirected by air, the air surcharge is collected from the addressee. The recall fee is non-refundable.

Delivery of inward Mails Inward mails are delivered under the same conditions as inland articles. Arrangements exist for delivery of inward foreign articles at the office of exchange upon request, provided acceptable proof of identity is produced by the addressee for customs examination or other formalities.

Period of detention and warehousing charges For inward foreign articles (except Parcels) over 500gms, a warehousing charge of Rs. 5/- per day (or Rs. 10/- per day for Post Restante) is collected from the eighth day if the addressee fails to take delivery within 7 days of first presentation. For inward foreign Parcels, a warehousing charge of Rs. 1/- per day (both normal and Post Restante) is collected from the eleventh day if delivery is not taken within 10 days of first presentation. Post Restante Parcels are detained for a maximum of 1 month, and Post Restante VP Parcels for 7 days.
